JAPANESE: Am I correct when I say that 'ni' is basically 'am'? So like "Watashi wa gakkou ni imasu." is I am at school? I'm just trying to understand the details alittle bit more instead of just memorizing words...

In this case, "ni" is used to tell a location. So you can actually think of the word "ni" like "at," rather than "am." "Wa" is closer to "am."
