You have 7 coins. 6 of them weigh the same, but one of them is slightly heavier. You have a balance scale. With only 2 weighings how can you find the heaviest coin?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first you weigh any 3 coins in one side and 3 coins in the other one, leaving one coin outside. If the weights are equal you know the outside coin is the heaviest. if not, you take the group of three that was the heaviest to weigh it again. you will take these 3 coins and weigh one in each side, while leaving one outside. if the weights are equal we know the outside coin is the heaviest, but if the weights arent equal you will see which coin is the heaviest. Did that help?
