Draw the graph of both equations on the same axis, then find the point of intersection.
A
3y − x = 4(green),y + 2x = −1(blue)
rearrange the equations so you get them as y= ... So for the first equation you get y=-2x-1
Try the second one. Then you put any value for x to get the value of y, and then plot the points.
If you're wondering how I got the first equation as y= -2x-1 .. you do: Minus 2x from both sides to get: y+2x-2x = -1 -2x As 2x-2x=0 Then you get y+0=-1-2x, which is the same as y=-2x-1
Find quite a few points for each equation. So for example, for the first one: y=-2x-1 Let x=0, then you get y=-1, so plot (0,-1) on the graph Let x=-1, then you get y=1, so plot (-1,1) on the graph .. then join the points together, and extend the line of the graph since it's a straight line. Do the same for the second equation, and extend the lines until they both meet. Then you should be able to see the point of intersection.
