It's saying that people write about what's happening in the now. Stephanie Meyer wrote about vampires, and we had a vampire craze. In 2012, the fad was zombies. Literature is like a history of a society's culture.

I agree, but i think it also means our minds can stretch as far as we want them to. The more we read, the farther it stretches. How much kids read and thought in the 50s compared to how much kids read and think now is a very big difference. So the level of intellectual competence depends on the generation.
