If you only have a 3-quart pitcher and a 5-quart pitcher, how can you measure exactly 1 quart?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Step 1) Fill up the 3 quart pitcher to the very top Step 2) Empty the 3 quart pitcher's contents into the 5 qt pitcher Step 3) Repeat steps 1 and 2, but do NOT spill any water onto the ground. So you're completely filling the 5 qt pitcher and you will have 1 qt of water left over. This is because 3+3 = 6 quarts will be in the 3 qt pitcher total, but only 5 will transition over, so you have 6-5 = 1 qt left.
