Algebra 2 help please

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hartnn (hartnn):

since 'x' and 'y' vary INVERSELY, the equation will be of the form \[\large y=\frac{k}{x}\] you can find the value of 'k' but putting x=2, and y=8 in the above equation. can you find 'k' ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

k would be 4?

hartnn (hartnn):

no, how did you calculate that ? 8 = k/2 multiply 2 on both sides, ....k=... ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i divide 8/2 k=16

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but you multiply.

hartnn (hartnn):

yes, in inverse proportion, we multiply. so, y=16/x for first. For second also, you multiply first 2 values, n=20, c=5 what you get nc=...? ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you multiply them together correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got 100

hartnn (hartnn):

yup, we multiply variables 'x' and 'y' or in 2nd Q, 'n' and 'c' to get a constant value everytime, 16 in 1st Q, and 100 in 2nd Q thats correct! nc=100 :) any doubts ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you for the help!:)

hartnn (hartnn):

welcome ^_^
