The canal was created in order to connect the Atlantic and Pacific oceans so that ships wouldn't have to sail down under Cape Horn at the southern tip of South America. Work began in 1881, but wasn't finished until 1914. This more efficient route to the US West Coast and Pacific Nations made it possible for those areas to become more integrated in the world economy. The French started construction in 1881 by a man named Ferdinand de Lesseps, who also built the Suez Canal. The funding came from Paris, but eventually went bankrupt and the project was haulted by 1890. Another factor that led to the French quitting construction was poor planning of weather and the terrain of the area. Malaria and yellow fever were massive crises that led to the deaths of 22,000 French workers. The United States eventually bought the territory and the rights to build on the canal ($40 million to the French for equipment and excavation and $10 million to the new country Panama) by May 4, 1904. After completion in 1914, the American Society of Civil Engineers called the Panama Canal one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
