if you have seen buildings in ancient Greece, then you know what they look like, when building those structures, even though they were a thriving nation, they did not have all the materials in the world, i Would say that there buildings were for structural support, but also some of the spiritual buildings did have more designs and they just looked cooler, but the answer to your question is NO, the ancient greeks did not design columns strictly for support, if so then must of the buildings we see today in photoshop, and real life, would not be standing there.

They were also for protection from invasions

the columns, really gave no protection, they were giants pillars, easy to get around, the main defense would be walls, with towers, as you probably know.
