Why is Darwin’s theory of natural selection sometimes described as "survival of the fittest"?
"Survival of the fittest." To explain, let me give you an example scenario: Pretend there's an island, where two kinds of birds live. Birds WITH sharp beaks, and birds WITHOUT sharp beaks. And the only source of food on the island, for birds, is nuts, with hard shells. A bird would need a sharp beak, in order to crack open the nuts, and get food. So, what would happen to all the birds WITHOUT the sharp beaks? They would die. They would starve to death. Because they don't have the right kind of beak, to crack open the hard shells. Do you get it? ~~~~~~~~~~ "Survival of the fittest" says that in order to survive in a certain environment, an organism must have the right tools, the right physiology, in order to survive. In my example, you could see that in order to survive, the birds needed the right kind of beak.
soooooo confusinggggggggg lol
Here, let me ask a question.... Pretend it's freezing cold outside. There are two kinds of animals: Animals with thick fur, and animals with no fur. Which animals do you think would survive? Why?
animals with thick fur....because the fur helps them keep warm while the animals with no fur will die because they have no fur to help them keep them warm
Yeah. You're right. The ones WITH fur would live. A The ones WITHOUT fur would die. That's an example of "survival of the fittest." "Survival of the fittest" means that only the organisms that can handle the environment will survive. The rest will die.
thank you!!!! i understand now :D
That's awesome. You're welcome.
