22 pairs so 44 autosomal chromosomes and 1 pair(2) of sex chromosomes

The answer above is a very good answer if the species in question is human. In most mammals I think it would be true that there are n-2 somatic chromosomes where n is the total number. (somatic is another way of saying chromosomes which are not sex chromosomes).
