Indulgences were a way for the Catholic Church to make money off of people's sins. Basically, if someone sinned, they had to pay a certain amount of money (indulgences) to the church in exchange for forgiveness. So, I rape someone, and I might have to pay 400 indulgences to the church in exchange for forgiveness.
