What do you think might have been some of the events in Europe that motivated Japan to enter the war on the side of the Axis Powers?

Japan's ultimate goal was to be a free and 1st rank nation. They felt hugely neglected after helping the Allied powers in WWI during the Paris Peace Conference. They really only needed help keeping Britain occupied (which Germany was able to do). They wanted to see Russia taken down, which it was. Their ultimate goal was to take the United States' colonies because they were so close to their own lands.
