Mikaela, the only rule of a function is that each input must have only one output. If there is any input that has 2 outputs, then we say that it is not a function.

That's more work than you need to do. If the vertical line test is the ONLY way that you can understand what a function is, then sure, I guess you should plot the points. It's not really necessary though.

Think of it in terms of inputs and outputs. A function takes in inputs, and it gives out outputs. If I put in an input (an x value) what comes out should be exactly 1 y value. If more than one y value comes out, that's a problem.
This map shows that if I put in 6, the output is -5.
If I put in 3, the output is 2.
If I put in 2, the output is 6 and 7.
