How do you get access to the periodicals and readings required for many of these courses?
Sadly, with great difficulty. Some are open access - try http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/ - and sometimes the authors (or at least one of the authors) will post their papers on their websites in stark defiance of all copyright laws imposed on them by their journals. Other than that, look for similar papers (on Pubmed) on the same topic (particularly useful for reviews). And google the subject, look for other sources on the wider web. Not as good, I realize, but better than nothing.
you could get updated from IEEE Spectrum by subject.. its a good magazine to make updated knowledge in any technical areas like biomedical, naotechnology, robotics or any such fields..
