each demsion of a rectanglular prismis increasing by 80 percent. what percent of the origanal volume is the volume of the new prism.

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

volume of a prism is length*width*height, right? If you multiply each of {l,w,h} by 1.8, what happens to V?

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Here's a useful model for thinking about why the answer isn't just 80% more than the original volume: Imagine that you have 1 kid's building block, a cube 1" on each side. The volume of that cube is 1" x 1" x 1" = 1 cubic inch. Now, let's build a cube that is 100% bigger — 2 blocks on each side. Now we have a cube that is 2" x 2" x 2" = 8 cubic inches (it takes 8 blocks to build that cube, 2 layers of 2x2). Or let's go even bigger, we'll make one that is 3" x 3" x 3" = 27 cubic inches (27 blocks, 3 layers of 3x3 blocks).
