Can someone help me and kinda explain what I'm supposed to do?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so far I have 12y=3y-3

hero (hero):

You're supposed to cross multiply

hero (hero):

5(3y - 8) = 12y

OpenStudy (hba):

@CaveDucks How did you get that ? Follow @Hero

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ohhh okay I was cross multiplying wrong. If that's even possible lol. So now I have 15y-3=12y.

hero (hero):

What's 5 x 8 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

40

hero (hero):

Okay, so when you DISTRIBUTE on the left side you're supposed to get: 5*3y - 5*8 = 12y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh okay so i messed up where i did 5*-8

hero (hero):

Okay, so finish it correctly

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got 13y at the end. i subtracted 15y from both sides and came out with -40=-3y and divided them both by -3 which came out with 13.333(a bunch of 3s) so I assumed it was 13y

hero (hero):

5(3y - 8) = 12y 15y - 40 = 12y That's what you were supposed to get afterwards Then you put like terms on the same side using inverse operations: 15y - 12y = 40 3y = 40 y = 40/3 You don't need to go any further than that since it is the most exact form to express the answer.

Ohhhh I was doing it completely wrong. Thank you for explaining it to me and helping me :)
