[4x+3]-2=5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Are those brackets or absolute value signs?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

absolute values

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok then, so do you know what the first step is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well its something like add the 2 to the other side of the equation then I get lost.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok then, so then you have [4x+3] = 7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes but I dont know what to do after

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what im really confused by is the extraneous solution part

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so, the absolute value of 4 times what plus 3 = 7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4X1=3=7?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

http://www.icoachmath.com/math_dictionary/Extraneous_Solution.html this may help with the extranous solution part

K THANKS

OpenStudy (phi):

|4x+3| = 7 can be broken into two equations 1) 4x+3= 7 2) -(4x+3)= 7 solve both equations for 1) add -3 to both sides 4x +3 - 3 = 7 -3 4x = 4 divide both sides by 4: x=1 can you solve the 2nd equation?

OpenStudy (phi):

the first step for equation 2) is "distribute" the minus one: multiply -1 times everything inside the parens
