In a football game, one team makes seven plays in the first quarter. The results of those plays are( in order): gain 7 yards, gain of 2 yards, loss of 5 yards, loss of 12 yards, gain of 16 yards, gain of 8 yards. What is the overall gain (or loss) from all seven plays?

Okay, well I'm not a football expert, but I'm guessing gaining yards would be positive and and losing yards would be negative. To express this mathematically, take all of the gains and losses and translate them to numbers.
gain 7 = +7
gain 2 = +2
lose 5 = -5
lose 12 = -12
gain 16 = +16
gain 8 = +8

The overall gain (or loss) would just be adding all of the above together. Do u get it now? (:
