what is the maximum volume of a pyramid that can fit inside a cube with a side length of 18cm?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well the base of the pyramid would be equal to the base of the cube. |dw:1358090035884:dw|

And the height of the pyramid is equal to the height of the cube

this is not the way to solve it. Putting the base of the pyramid flush with one of the sides yields a max volume of 1944 cubic centimetres. Putting the base of the pyramid as the diagonal bisection of the cube gives a pyramid of volume 2749 cubic cm.
