After the orignal equations,I substituted teh y in teh second equation and got 2-(8-x)=7.No there's no x in teh second equation.

If there are no x terms in 7 = 2-y, then why not solve for y

7 = 2-y

7 - 2 = -y

5 = -y

-y = 5

y = -5
