Solving Systems Using Substitution???Am I doing this right???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y=8-x and 7=2-y...2-(8-x)??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

16-2x=7...Is this correct???

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the original equations are y = 8-x and 7 = 2-y ? is there an x in the second equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes those are the original equations.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

is there an x in the second equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

After the orignal equations,I substituted teh y in teh second equation and got 2-(8-x)=7.No there's no x in teh second equation.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Then I used the distributive proprety to get 16-2x=7.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

If there are no x terms in 7 = 2-y, then why not solve for y 7 = 2-y 7 - 2 = -y 5 = -y -y = 5 y = -5

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

then plug this into y = 8-x to get -5 = 8-x then solve for x -5 = 8 - x -5 - 8 = -x -13 = -x -x = -13 x = 13
