what are the uses of gymnosperms?

Well, im sure in your text book of some sort it has told you that gymnosperms are the "male" so to speak, and that angiosperms are the "female" so if a gymnosperm is the male, what does it do? (if you nedd any mroe help figuring out the answer than i will be glad to help you out.)
