Just use your middle school math (i.e., cross-multiply), and follow up by solving the resulting linear equation.\[\frac{3y-8}{12}=\frac{y}{5} \implies 15y-40=12y \implies y=\frac{40}{3}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you explain that formula to me? Where did the 40 come from?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

When you multiply the five in the right hand side's denominator by the 3y-8 in the left hand side's numerator, you have to use the distributive property.

\[5(3y-8)=15y-40\]

Thank you!
