How does increasing the polarity of the solvent system affect the results of a TLC?

The TLC plate is polar (it's made of silicon dioxide, which has polar bonds). So polar solvents stick to it better and non-polar things stick to it solvents. This causes polar solvents to travel not very far and non-polar solvents to travel far.
