Suppose that a newly born pair of rabbits are allowed to breed in a controlled environment. How many rabit pairs will there be after 1 year if the following assumptions are made? A male and female rabbit can mate at the age of 2 months. At the end of its 3rd month, a female rabbit can produce another pair of rabbits (one male and one female). The rabbits never die. The female produces one new pair each month from the 3rd month on.

For the first three months, there is only 1 pair of rabbits. At the end of the third, there are two. At the end of the fourth month, since only one pair of rabbits was old enough to breed, we get a third pair of rabbits. At the end of the fifth month, still, only one pair of rabbits was able to breed so we get a fourth pair. Now at the end of the sixth month, the second pair we got was able to breed also, so we get a fifth and a sixth pair of rabbits. At the end of the seventh month we have three breeding pairs so we get up to nine pairs now. At the end of the eighth month we have four breeding pairs, so now we are up to thirteen. At the end of the ninth month, we have six breeding pairs, so we go up to nineteen pairs of rabbits. At the end of the tenth month we have nine breeding pairs, so we go up to twenty-eight. At the end of the eleventh month, we have thirteen breeding pairs, so we go up to forty-one. At the end of one year, we have nineteen breeding pairs, so we go up sixty.
