what is the difference between linear and non-linear?

If you are dealing with equations, the graph of a linear equation (as the word linear means) is a straight line. The graph of a non-linear equation is not a straight line. It may be a parabola, and ellipse, a hyperbola, a polynomial of degree 2 or higher, etc.
