Algebra 2 help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (aravindg):

question please ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i posted a picture

hartnn (hartnn):

can you factor p^2-4p-32 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

add 4 and 32 together is 36

hartnn (hartnn):

no...to factor that, you need to find 2 numbers whose product is -32 and sum is -4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so like -4 x 8?

hartnn (hartnn):

good try ! its -8 and +4

hartnn (hartnn):

so, p^2-4p-32 =p^2-8p+4p-32 =p(p-8)+4(p-8) factor out p-8 from that, what u get ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

p-8;-4?

hartnn (hartnn):

did you mean (p-8)(p+4)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but all the answer choices have - 4 at the end

hartnn (hartnn):

yeah, p+4 =0 gives p=-4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would it be B?

hartnn (hartnn):

yes! good :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how would I start out number 2?

hartnn (hartnn):

you need to factor both num and denom. can you ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im gonna try

OpenStudy (anonymous):

alright i'm confused on how to start it out

hartnn (hartnn):

hint : +24 = 8*3, 8+3 =11 for numerator -24 = -8*3 ,-8+3= -5 for denominator.

hartnn (hartnn):

now can you factor both ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

which one do i factor?

hartnn (hartnn):

you need to factor both..

hartnn (hartnn):

i'll do the denominator, you do numerator, as its simpler. q^2-5q-24 = q^2 -8q+3q -24 =q(q-8)+3(q-8) =(q+3)(q-8)
