Please help with word equations? Solid Silver carbonate decomposes into solid silver oxide and gaseous carbon dioxide when heated. Adding chlorine gas to a solution of potassium iodide gives solid iodine and a solution of potassium chloride. Iodine crystals react with chlorine gas to form iodine trichloride.

\[2AgCO_{3(s)} \rightarrow 4AgO_{(s)} + CO_{2(g)}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[2KI_{(aq)} + Cl_{2(g)} \rightarrow I_{2(g)} + 2KCl_{(aq)}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[I_{2(s)} + 3Cl_{2(g)} \rightarrow 2ICl_{3(s)}\]

I assume Iodine Trichloride is a solid as there was nothing posted about its phase. A quick internet search indicates that it may be a solid but that depends on a few other factors as well. Hope this helps.
