78+b =40

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Are you trying to find the value of b? If so, subtract 78 from both sides to give you b alone on the left side, and its value on the right side. As long as you do the same thing to both sides of the equation, it remains correct.

I have it work it out

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

It's not going to work itself out :-)

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

\[78 + b - 78 = 40 - 78\]\[b = 40 -78 = ?\]
