\[t^{2}-7t-44\]

zepdrix (zepdrix):

So we want FACTORS of -44 that ADD to give us -7. Let's try \(-2 \cdot 22\). These are factors of -44 right? They multiply to give us -44. If we add them we get \(20\), Hmm that's no good. Let's try some other factors of -44. How about \(-11 \cdot 4\)? They clearly multiply to give us -44, good good. If we add them we get, \(-11+4=-7\). Ooo we found the factors that will give us -7!! So we can write our quadratic as 2 binomials WITH the given factors.\[\large t^2-7t-44 \quad = \quad (t-11)(t+4)\]

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Let me know if you're confused by any of that :u
