Solve: x − 5 = 12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well.. The is about as simple as a question can get. You have to solve for x obviously. Now just read what the question is asking.. 5 less then x is = 12. Or in other words 5 more then 12 is equal to x correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats very easy. Just add 5 on both sides. the answer will be 12+5. Which equals to (you should no)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

17

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Correct. x = 17 Gj.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yup

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Solve: 8 − x = 17

OpenStudy (anonymous):

9 right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No sorry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

25

OpenStudy (anonymous):

k let me think..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

First you subtract 8 from both sides

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so now you have -x = 9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Since you cant have a -x you multiply both side by -1 -1(-x) = -1(9)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So what do you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Remember a negative times a negative is a positive

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The reason you cant do the simple add 8 in this one is because the x is negative.
