geometry help just a few simple questions please!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i'll try.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay the first two are just equations i need help solving.. x+1=3y and 8x+8+7x+4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2. 15x=12.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

huh?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jim_thompson5910 help me lol please

OpenStudy (anonymous):

...

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

solving for x x+1=3y x = 3y - 1 ------------------------------------------------------- Solving for y x+1=3y 3y = x+1 y = (x+1)/3

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

The basic idea is to isolate the desired variable in terms of the other variable

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

8x+8+7x+4 (8x+7x)+(8+4) 15x + 12 So 8x+8+7x+4 simplifies to 15x + 12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i am able to get x+1=3y too but what do i do from there? same for y

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you want to solve x+1 = 3y for y right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes sir

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

first flip the equation, then divide both sides by 3 to isolate y \[\Large x+1 = 3y\] \[\Large 3y = x+1\] \[\Large y = \frac{x+1}{3}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i still dont get it jim:/

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you basically want y = ... ie you want y all by itself on one side

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

to isolate y, you have to divide both sides by 3 to undo multiplication of 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so what do i do now

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

I'm not sure did you want to graph? some of the instructions seem missing on this one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea here ill post the whole thing bc im getting confused too lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

9. In parallelogram DEFG, DH = x + 1, HF = 3y, GH = 3x – 4, and HE = 5y + 1. Find the values of x and y. The diagram is not drawn to scale. this one has nothing to do with the 8x+8 equation that one is seprate

OpenStudy (anonymous):

omg wrong picture lol hold on

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

wrong pic? lol

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

alright, thats ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

omg hold on

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there we go lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

10. If ON = 8x – 8, LM = 7x + 4, NM = x – 5, and OL = 3y – 6, find the values of x and y for which LMNO must be a parallelogram. The diagram is not drawn to scale. this is the other one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wow guys.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

If LMNO is a parallelogram, then ON = LM 8x - 8 = 7x + 4 solve for x -------------------------------------- Also, if LMNO is a parallelogram, then NM = OL x-5 = 3y - 6 Plug the solution you got for x, then solve for y.
