If "A student did a job for $24, and it took him 1 hour longer than he expected, so he earned $4 per hour less than he expected, how long did he expect it would take to do the job" is the question, and the set up is 24 = 24 + ___?<-- what is this? x x+1

x= time he expected it would take him. So 24/x is his expected hourly rate. x+1 is the actual time and 24/(x+1) is the actual hourly rate. So \[\frac{24}{x}-4=\frac{24}{x+1}\]
Can you solve that?
yeah, thanks!
