drop a perpendicular line down from -b,c or b,c to the x axis and then use Pythagorean theorem to find the diagonal length. By dropping a perpendicular line down, you get the base and the height.

ok, your height is c. That is the distance from (-b,c) to the x axis. your base is the distance from (-b,c) to (a,0). (b+a).
