Take a look at these two pictures of rocks: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/60/Gneiss.jpg http://geology.com/rocks/pictures/gneiss.jpg They're both pictures of gneiss (pronounced "nice") rock. Do you see how those rocks have stripes of different colors, going across them? That's what we call FOLIATION. And rocks that have these different-colored stripes are called FOLIATED rocks.
