in evaluating two species that look very different, how could a comparison of the species' genes contribute to an understanding of their evolutionary relationship?

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Genes basically tell the "story" of a certain species. By taking two genes of two species, you can compare and see how they are alike. If they are biologically alike, we can probably assume that the species are somewhat related and therefore evolved from a common ancestor.
