how to use Stem and leaf to write decimal numbers like 19.36 20.89 21.74 19.54 21.14

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

say you had 10.21,10.24, 10.29, 10.31, 10.52 The stems would be 102, 103, 105 The leaves would be 1, 4, 9 (for the stem 102), 1 (for the stem 103), and 2 (for the stem 105) So the stem and leaf plot would look like this 102 | 149 103 | 1 104 | 105 | 2 Key: 102 | 9 stands for the value 10.29

what about the decimal number?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

The rule is that each digit in the leaves column represents each data value, so that's why we have to force the rest of the number into the stem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok ` so i leave the last digit number , right ?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

I did an example with decimal numbers here's another one http://www.purplemath.com/modules/stemleaf2.htm scroll to the bottom of the page

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so what you do is make this list 193 | 194 | 195 | 196 | 197 | 198 | 199 | 200 | 201 | 202 | 203 | 204 | 205 | 206 | 207 | 208 | 209 | 210 | 211 | 212 | 213 | 214 | 215 | 216 | 217 | this represents the decimals 19.3 to 21.7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok ` can I do it like 10 / 21

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for the decimal numbers

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

then you fill out the leaves 193 | 6 194 | 195 | 4 196 | 197 | 198 | 199 | 200 | 201 | 202 | 203 | 204 | 205 | 206 | 207 | 208 | 9 209 | 210 | 211 | 4 212 | 213 | 214 | 215 | 216 | 217 | 4

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

This is list very sparse because you only have 4 values that are quite spread out

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

something like 208 | 4 means 20.84

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok ` got it . thank you very much
