A plane is 160 miles north and 110 miles east of an airport. If the pilot wants to fly directly to the airport, what bearing should be taken?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[\tan^{-1} (160/110)=55.49 270-55.49=214.51

Drawing it will give you a way better picture of the question. |dw:1358924636222:dw|

Use Pythagoras to find the hypotenuse and then follow up with the cosine rule to find the angle which I found to be 62 degrees and 1 minute.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Then you subtract that from 270 and you get your bearing.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Most of the times bearings should be to the nearest degree but I did it to the nearest minute.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And you don't need the direction.

thank u I got it
