Ok seriously guys we have a filter in chat and messages but y dont we have one in the names there has been 2 ppl that i have inapropriate names we need to come up with a thing where there is a filter in where u sign up, I mean seriously "wingspanbutt" is that a kid friendly name?!?!?! And "BOBTHEowletGOT" Seriously we need a filter in the registration.

What I have to say on this is that even in chat we have only filter for a limited number of word filters .There are tons of wierd names a person can come up with ..I have examples but do not want to mention here....So its better you report a person when you see their username is not appropriate

This topic has been discussed before, and the general consensus last time, was that putting that kind of filter in for usernames would not be worth it. I'm not sure of the details, so I'll wait for the admins to get here before I try to explain things too incorrectly.

I second what KingGeorge says. As I understand the discussion last time it came up, filters on usernames were impractical because bad words are easily embedded in other characters - 10101*badname*10101. The search for substrings and substring variants like 10101*bandame*10101 is tougher to implement than searches on bad words picked up by the language filter. Personally, I think they should be filtered; that is mere statement of the reasons I was given why they are not. You'd need an admin to comment.

I think making a filter for names is really impractical. As Blues said, it is SO easy to go around a filter. I think if people just reported them it would really be a major issue. There are not *that* many people (proportional to everyone else joining) that create inappropriate usernames and when a mod or admin see them they take care of it.

We rely on ourselves and moderators to suspend such users. We're not even convinced the filters for chat, replies, and questions are worth it. They result in two things:
- The filtered versions of the words become as “bad” as the original versions anyway, so we're doing the same moderation work.
- There are trivial ways around any filter that are impossible to address.
