How do entitlements affect the US government's spending and why do they affect it?

Medals will be given if helped. I'm really lost.

Not really sure on this one, this is more Econ section then the history one suffice to say that the entitlements for the most part are harder to actually defund and some part of the budget must be appropriated to it.
