Evaluate the following. Write your answer in scientific notation. (3 x 107)(6.1 x 103) 18.3 x 1010 18.3 x 1021 1.83 x 1010 1.83 x 1011

hero (hero):

Multiply 6.1 x 3 Then Multiply 10^7 x 10^3 by adding exponents Finally move the decimal point accordingly. Moving the decimal point on place to the left you increase the exponent by 1 6.1 x 3 = 18.3 10^7 x 10^3 = 10^10 so you have 18.3 x 10^10 But we have to express in scientific notation so: 1.83 x 10^11

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you so much!

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

Hero since when do you give direct answers o.o

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

also, herro hero!

hero (hero):

I don't consider it giving direct answer as much as I consider it demonstration of the process. After demonstration, then I expect the user to know how to do it. Sometimes you have to demonstrate how to solve a problem.

hero (hero):

If I just simply stated the answer is 1.83 x 10^11, then that is just giving the answer without explanation.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hey so would: Evaluate and write your answer in scientific notation: (2 x 107)(1.3 x 10-3) 2.6 x 10^4 2.6 x 10^-21 2.6 x 10^-4 be 2.6x10^4

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

mm - I refuse to give out answers explicitly, which is most likely why I'm not gaining any smartscore. But I do believe that even with teh process, many users just look at the answer.

hero (hero):

Well, I guess we're gonna find out what @EmmaH is about.

hero (hero):

@EmmaH, the process of solving this next problem is the same as the previous one.

hero (hero):

The only difference is you have to subtract the exponents instead of add them.

hero (hero):

Everything else is the same.

hero (hero):

Well, it will require some guidance but you should at least be able to multiply the decimals and the exponents. Can you try it please?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so 10^7- 10^-3 would that be 10^11?

hero (hero):

No, it would not. Subtract exponents means to subtract 3 from 7.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but isnt it a -3?

hero (hero):

And you don't write it like that. You write it like this: 10^(7-3)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oooooh!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

10^4

hero (hero):

Yes, exactly. So which answer choice is it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the first

hero (hero):

Good job

thanks for the help!!
