In order for sediment to be transformed into rock, what processes must take place?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what type of rock? sedimentary? igneous? or metamorphic?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh wait sorry, you said sediment. well for sedimentary 1st, weathering and erosion, then deposition, and last lithification/cementation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lithification is the name of the process. it basically involves either a chemical composition change (gluing the sediments together) or pressure (like sediments at the bottom of the ocean becoming sandstone)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep lithification, compression and compaction, cementation, and biological activity
