Which of the following best describes philosophy? A. A branch of science based on the scientific method B. A valuable tool frequently used in scientific experimentation C. Discussion and conclusions based on a rational argument D. Strong beliefs about religion and the supernatural

OpenStudy (kuoministers):

well the one that BEST describes it would be Discussion and conclusions based on a rational argument

Two students are having a discussion about crazy product claims. One student asks the other, "Why is scientific evidence important for product claims?" To answer this correctly the student should respond: A. "In order for the claim to be considered true, the company must produce at least one scientific study done by their company." B. "In order for the claim to be considered true, it must be backed up by some evidence that supports the ideas that are advertised." C. "In order for the claim to be considered true, there must be evidence that scientists use the product." D. "In order to know that a product claim is true, there should be an adequate amount of scientific evidence that is relevant to the claim, has been peer reviewed, and contains no bias."

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't think this is biology, but I think philosophy is best described by C. Philosophy is a very interesting subject to study, and a little difficult to define, but it usually has nothing to do with religion or the "supernatural" so D is out of the question. It's not really a tool as opposed to a field all it owns so I would personally eliminate B. A is somewhat possible but I still prefer C. Agreed with Kuo

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I would say D. for the second one, it best explains the reasoning behind it. Wait for Kuo to share his thoughts then decide on one.

OpenStudy (kuoministers):

Yea i agree it should be D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Which of these would you study if you wanted to learn more about the human body? A. Life science B. Logic C. Physical science D. Social science

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Probably life science. Life science tends to be things like biology and anatomy.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah thts wat i was thinking

OpenStudy (kuoministers):

life science involves the human body so yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sedimentary rocks are usually ___________ A. layered B. crystallized C. formed from magma D. black i think its layered

OpenStudy (kuoministers):

yea its layered

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Agreed with Kuo again, layered.

If a company hired a scientist to prove their product was safe, there would be concern because A. the study may contain bias. B. the study might be wrong because there was only one scientist involved. C. the study would be able to prove the product was safe because it had good funding. D. the study would be unreliable because it wouldn't use the scientific method.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sheesh, how many of these do you have? Lol Hmm... I'd say B. Usually when testing something you want to have multiple people testing it, not just one person, it decreases the probability of human error.

OpenStudy (kuoministers):

If a company hired a scientist they only hired one scientist?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Which situation describes a scientist acting in an ethical way? A. A scientist decides not to pursue a research project even though he'd make a lot of money because he feels the research is focused on something that might harm the public. B. A scientist decides to perform an experiment that she knows will cause terrible harm because she really wants to know the results. C. A scientist finds an error in another scientist's work but fails to report the error because the other scientist is a friend. D. A scientist finds that her data does not support her hypothesis so she alters the data.

OpenStudy (kuoministers):

oh yea then it should be right :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A. Ethical means acting on your morals, doing what you think is right morally despite what's going to be profitable to you. By not pursuing a project that could make her rich simply because it could hurt others she's acting ethically. :)

OpenStudy (kuoministers):

certainly A

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Which statement best describes how competition plays a role in science? A. Because scientists share work, competition is fierce and unethical. B. Scientists are very competitive and never share information. C. Scientisits do not compete and always work together. D. Scientists use the work of other scientists but friendly competition does exist.

OpenStudy (kuoministers):

ummm D maybe?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah it's D.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hmm.. this is a tricky one. I would say D but i'm not totally positive. That's the last one I can do because I have to go somewhere, sorry. But these two can help you with the rest. Good luck.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do u guys get soo smart?

OpenStudy (kuoministers):

umm think logically i guess

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm completely positive. A is false, because scientist do share work, but they also work within a code of ethics. B is false because they do absolutely share information. Much of it is shared through published articles. C is false, because scientists don't always work together. Not every scientist aims to test out the same hypothesis, under the same question.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The agents of metamorphism are ___________________. A. chemicals and weathering B. heat, chemicals and weathering C. heat, pressure and chemicals D. heat and ice

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Metamorphic rocks are rocks that have been "morphed," or "changed." To morph something means to change it. And these changes are made by both heat and pressure.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Approximately how many known minerals are there? A. 20 B. 40 C. 4000 D. 2,000,000 i say a or d

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know nothing about rocks, so I just researched this question. I've found different answers. 2,500 3,000 3,800 Either way, it seems to be like 40 would be too few ad 2 million would be way too many.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i ment c and d ill go with c

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's likely C.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2 more ____________ and _____________ are in all silicate minerals. A. silicon and oxygen B. silicon and iron C. silicon and gold D. silicon and hydrogen

OpenStudy (anonymous):

SIlicate minerals are minerals that form rock. They all contain silicon and oxygen.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Which statement best describes how science and technology provides information which can help citizens during a disaster like a hurricane? A. Scientific discoveries have lead to the development of medicines which can be used to treat life-long health conditions. B. Technology helps scientists learn more about storms so they can develop better computer models. C. Science and technology have produced vaccines that prevent the spread of infectious diseases during natural disasters. D. Science and technology have led to more durable rafts that victims of flooding disasters can use.

OpenStudy (kuoministers):

yawn so many question give me a headache

OpenStudy (anonymous):

last

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Kuoministers B looks like the one that makes the most sense. But at the same time, I can't exact grasp the concept. Would it imply that "better computer models" would help citizens? What do you think?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

same

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I just researched the question. It has appeared before. Others have answered it with B, in the past.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

bt i say a c or d lol a

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thx guy soo much

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I would say B or D.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I wouldn't say C, because we're talking about hurricanes. I don't see how vaccines and pathogens have anything to do with hurricane disaster control.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no def not b or c

OpenStudy (anonymous):

d seems legit

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Science and technology may have led to better rafts. Honestly, I don't know. If it's true, then it's a viable choice. But it's also a very narrow example.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Why do you say "def not b"? Creating a better computer model helps predict future storms, which can be used to evacuate citizens earlier and prevent future deaths.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's right. The question didn't state it exactly as Veritas did. That's the only thing that made me doubt it, for a bit. But it's the truth.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nice 75% d is wrong b is right veritas

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thx guy tht the highest on a mid term yet tht i got lol XD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

guys*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No problem, glad to help. @InYourHead funny you mention "truth" since that's what Veritas means in Latin. :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

RIght! "Lux et Veritas." "Light and Truth." As they say in Yale.
