AREA OF THE POLYGON???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jim_thompson5910 @saifoo.khan @habbster

OpenStudy (habbster):

wait im gonna put a picture

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

Break the diagram into pieces. Try it out!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay @habbster :) I broke them into 3 pieces @saifoo.khan

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

Perfect! Start working the area out.

OpenStudy (habbster):

yeah then add it

OpenStudy (habbster):

it is hard to draw on paint :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How do you do that? :) Like, work it out? No worries, @habbster !

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

break it up like this (of course there are other ways to break it up)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yup! That's how I did it @jim_thompson5910 but now what? :)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

there are 3 regions: 19 x 12 region 2 x 17 region 3 x 3 region

OpenStudy (habbster):

uhhhh im not really good at drawing in paint too bad

OpenStudy (habbster):

but jim's drawing is just like mine

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

multiply out the dimensions of each region to get each individual piece's area then add up each area to get the total area

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ohh So then you do 19 x 12 x 2 x 2 14 x 14 x 3 x 3 x3 ??

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you don't multiply everything, you multiply only each length, width for each individual rectangle to get the separate areas then you add up the individual areas

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so when you split up the middle rectangle piece, is it 14 on the left side or is it 19?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

large rectangle: 19x12 = 228 square units medium sized rectangle: 2 x 17 = 34 square units smallest rectangle: 3x3 =9 square units

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay so then you just add up 228, 34, and 9? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got 271 :)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

same here

OpenStudy (habbster):

me too

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you guys!! :)
