"If the earthquake devastated the area and one like it hadn't occurred in over 300 years - what is your best guess? The Richter Scale is based on what is most likely to occur with each seismic rating. 

Look for the Richter Scale either online or in your book. :)"

7-8 in the Ritcher scale, or even more. You can see it in the history of Japan, they have a lot of earthquakes because of the geologic activity of the area, but worse ones happen like once in a century and they have a magnitude of 8 or even 9 sometimes.
