Please Help!!! On a rainy day in Ann Arbor, we observe a rainfall rate of 5 mm/hour. Assume it rains for 12 hours straight at the same rate. How many liters of rain do you collect over the 12 hours in a big bucket that covers an area of 1 m^2? How high is the water column in the bucket (in mm, cm and inches) after 12 hours? Will Ann Arbor be flooded? Since it is winter let us now assume that this precipitation comes down as fresh snow with a density of 0.1 g/cm^3. Convert the total precipitation into a snow height. Will we get snowed in and all get a day off?
5 mm/h high anywhere, TIMES 12h = 60 mm = 6 cm 60 mm x (1in/25.4 mm) = high water column in inches. 1 m^2 = 10000 cm^2 (area of bucket) 10000cm^2 TIMES 6 cm = 60000 cm^3 = 60 Lt (liter) / 12h. water density is basically 1.0 g/cm^3. TEN TIMES GREATER THAN SNOW, if you had 6 cm high with water, you will have TEN times more volume with snow. 6 cm x 10 = ? snow, find a ruler, is that much to call a day off?
yes it is! thank you!!!
