Solving an equation of this type is to show x = some number. In order to do that, you need to undo to x what those operations are doing. x is being multiplied by 3, and then 5 is being added to that product. First you need to undo the +5 by subtrating the 5 from both sides. Then you divide both side by 3 3x + 5 = 4 -5 -5 ------------- 3x = -1 Now divide both sides by 3 x = -1/3
