x^2+2x+1+8=0
(x+1)^2+8=0
(x+1)^2=-8
x+1=sqrt(-8)=2sqrt2*i
x=2sqrt2*i-1

Since the left side can't be factored, you can complete the square or use the quadratic formula.

Oh, wow. Thanks! I kept getting $$x=-1\pm \sqrt{-18}$$ and I know that is not right

i said 2sqrt2*i-1. so answer is d :)
