A cooling tower for a nuclear reactor is to be constructed in the shape of a hyperboloid of one sheet. The diameter at the base is 300 m and the minimum diameter, 500 m above the base, is 220 m. Find an equation for the tower. (Assume the center is at the origin with axis the z-axis and the minimum diameter is at the center.)

You know the equation of a hyperboloid right x^2/a+y^2/b-z^2/c=1 the problem is finding a value for a, b and c i'll look around

we know in the z direction it stretch 600m altogether, x direction it stretches 300mm, and for y i'm not sure. I've looked through my calc 3 notes and book and couldn't find a way to find a and b, look for them in your notes. What book are you using btw?

web assign

assuming we can use delta z/delta x for a we get a=200 and b-don't know and for c=300

:/ its ok
