Natural selection/evolution in a nutshell: A creature has a some sort of mutation that benefits it. It eventually breeds, and passes this beneficial trait through the gene-pool, creating a new sub-species or race that may or may not surpass the lesser form of aforementioned creatures. Okay, not really in a nutshell...The answer is the first option.
