How are exponents related to taking the root of a number?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If the exponent of the variable is even, divide the exponent by two and write the result to the left of the square root sign. If the exponent of the variable is odd, subtract one from the exponent, divide it by two, and write the result to the left.

\[\sqrt{x}=x^{1/2}\]

exponents are a different thing, exponential function is a^x, and root taking is mostly x^1/a. but if you want to take the Xth root of a constant a you you can use a^(1/x)
